World Environment Day awareness programme on beach cleaning activities was held on 22.05.2018 at Palavakkam beach, Chennai under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, on the motto of “Cleanliness is Service”. Thiru A.V.Venkatachalam I.F.S., Director of Environment has welcomed the participants and explained the World environment day theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The Hon'ble Minister for Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu Thiru K. C. Karuppannan inaugurated the programme and also participated in the Cleaning activity. Officials from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chief Educational office, Forest Department, Revenue Department, Fishermen Association, Non Governmental Organizations, Self help groups and M/s Ramkey of Chennai have participated in the beach cleaning activities along with NGC and Eco Club Coordinators, Students. Pamphlets, Handbills, Gloves, T-Shirts, Caps, cleaning materials such as brooms & dust bin etc., have been provided to all the participants. The participants carried out the cleaning exercise for a stretch of 1 to 2 Kms distance in Palavakkam area. The programme started at about 7.30 am in the morning which grouped into 4 or 5 batches and disposed off the accumulated waste through M/s Ramkey Ltd., Chennai. About 600 participants comprising School Students, Beach Walkers' Association members, NGO's, Government officials, local people and ENVIS staff participated in this mega event.
