Appeal of the Director Of Environment On International Tiger Day 29th July 2019

International Tiger Day as Global Tiger Day is observed on 29th of July every year; it is celebrated every year to observance the aim to raising awareness of the importance of tiger conservation.  It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit. The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues. The tiger is the largest cat and it is a remarkable creature, with its unique black and orange stripes and attractively marked face. This day is celebrated to protect the tiger habitats and gain support through awareness for tiger protection.
 
 
 
The National Tiger Conservation Authority has been fulfilling its mandate within the ambit of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 for strengthening tiger conservation in the country through advisories/normative guidelines, appraisal of tiger status, conservation initiatives and recommendations of specially constitutes committees.
 
 
 
The Government of India have taken a pioneering initiative for conserving its national animal, the tiger, by launching the ‘Project Tiger’ in 1973. From 9 tiger reserves since its formative years, the Project Tiger coverage has increased to 50 at present, spread out in 18 of our tiger range states.
 
 
Tamil Nadu has been a pioneer state in protected area management and development of forest resources and Wildlife. There are four tiger reserves in Tamil Nadu such namely, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Kalakkad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. Tiger conservation plans in the Tiger resources interalia, includes protection, habitat amelioration, day to day monitoring, eco development for local people in buffer areas, voluntary relocation of people from core/critical tiger habitats, and addressing human-wildlife conflicts, within the ambit of the Wildlife protection Act,1972 and guidelines of Project Tiger / National Tiger Conservation Authority.
 
On this International Tiger Day, I urge all to take responsibility for jointly hands with Government Communities, NGOs and global conservation experts - to move tiger reintroduction plans forward and ensure that our country makes a contribution to the global goal of doubling wild tiger numbers.
